▲The Brutal Harvard Class That Suddenly Everyone Wants to Take (wsj.com)
RugnirViking 1 days ago [-]
Ive been looking at educating myself on some version of the trivium recently. Never had any worthwhile humanities education on philosophy, rhetoric, history of ideas, or logic from my high school education in the UK. My degrees have been all STEM. It's hard to push through alone though, id love some kinda evening course I could do.

All this to say, I get it. Its in the air at the moment, I think.

>So why are freshmen lining up to get into Humanities 10?

So, why are they? Paywalled for me.

> Humanities 10a will tentatively include works by Homer, Sophocles, Sappho, Plato, Dante, Shakespeare, Descartes, Mary Shelley, Marx, Kafka, Du Bois, and Morrison.

I had read all of these authors before college, with the exception of Sappho/du Bois - which feel like "modern" additions to a traditional survey - but my school was good about classics and American lit.

What are high school kids assigned to read these days, if not these authors?

We are assigned a number of those in AP and honors classes, which is what most Harvard students have taken.

Hum 10a/b wasn't that brutal. It was a decent amount of reading and writing, but it was pretty fun and more engaged alternative to Expos 20.

Most of us were already competitive in speech and debate in HS or were introduced to similar content via our AP teachers in high school, so it wasn't much of a transition.
